Mit jelent (nekem) mesternek lenni…?
A távol-keleti harcművészetek világának egyik fontos szereplője a MESTER…Erre a szóra mindenkinek felrémlik az ősz hajú és deresedő szakállú idős bácsika, aki szótlanul figyeli a tanítványok gyakorlását, és komor arckifejezéssel, gyakran a fejét csóválva, néhány szót mormolva sétálgat a tanítványai közelében, akik 1-1 intésére, vagy vezényszavára minden erejüket megfeszítve végzik a gyakorlataikat és mély tisztelettel közelítenek mesterük felé…
Nos…valószínűleg nem véletlen, hogy a fenti kép igen gyakori, ugyanis a távol-keleti harcművészetek szinte mindegyike az ókor és középkor legerősebb keleti nagyhatalmának, a kínai császárságnak konfucionista hagyományaiból táplálkozik. Ezen hagyományok alapköve i. e. 551-479-ig élt kínai tudós, filozófus Konfuciusz (eredetileg Kung Fu-Ce) tanítása.

What does it mean for me to be a master?
A master is a very important character of the martial arts world of the Far-east. This word makes us remind to a grey-haired and snow-bearded old uncle, who watches his disciples practising without saying a word and with a serious facial aspect, often wagging his head, murmurring some words while he is walking among his students, who for his one single caution or command do the drills from all of their strength and go forward their master with deep appreciation and respect.
So...probably it is not accidental, that the previous situation, that I have written about, is pretty common, as almost all of the martial arts from the Far-east feed upon the Confucianist traditions of the most powerful empire of the ancient and medieval times, the Chinese Empire. The basis of these traditions is the famous scholar, philosopher Confucius, who lived B.C. 551-479.
The center thought of the Confucianist principles is that social harmony can be achieved by people who subordinate their behavior to an upper moral law that feeds upon ancient traditions. As long as - following their selfish desire - it not happens, then this makes conflicts that destroys harmony an so people's lives.
The cornerstones of this law:
According to Confucius's guide, teaching, the ideal - "noble" - man is always cheerful, calm, meek, however he is majestic, honest, free from prejudice, from stubbornness and not selfish. His behaviour is polite, respectful towards his superiors, righteous in his treatment with the others, slow in his words and sober-minded, however agile in his acts, grim, but not capricious, makes the same claims against himself than against others. Abstains from pleasures in his young ages, from bantering when he is on the top of his strength and from greediness in his old ages. Placable, but not subservient. The noble soul aspires to truth, rewards charity with charity, injustice with justice. Becoming noble is not the matter of born, moral development can be achieved only by regular self-examination and by continuous self-improvement.
During the Chinese history those persons who completely fitted the upper mentioned details were called masters, Confucius himself was regarded as a master, so it is not accidental that the meaning of the Kung-Fu-ce name itself is: Kong master.
As the teachings of Confucius deeply soaked into the soul of the eastern societies, the consequence of this effected – following the Confucianist principles - the creation of the norm- and culture system of the Far-eastern martial arts. This is what we call ’etiquette’ with western word and this has a very important role in the life of a true martial artist.
So is this mean to be a master? We could answer yes, but something is still missing. This missing point can be illustrated with a quote by a person, though who is very far from Confucius in space and in time as well, but who created something special and permanent in his own art. This man was a composer, a musicologist, a music-master, he was Robert Schumann and his quote is:
„A true master never breed disciples, just masters.”
Our picture about an ideal master becomes complete this way, who lives and acts like it was mentioned upper, shows an example and breeds wise people who can show example to others.
At this point, we could even lean back and rest, because we know what a true master is really like, but: How can we achieve all these upper mentioned principles in today’s everyday life? What do all these mean to a martial artist of the 21th century?
Today, anybody can claim about himself, that he is a martial arts master. Many people make high requirements against others, while they do not fit any of them. Many of them say that they follow the upper principles of Confucius, while all these to them are just stage-sets, because humbleness is missing from them, humbleness forward everything, this is what really matters for a real martial artist.
Humbleness towards my chosen style, what means that I am trying to study it deeply, that I am trying to learn and understand it as thoroughly as possible and not just using it as a brand name.
I aspire to acquire and understand the system, it is a very hard task, but for a long term period this is the only way to be an expert in my chosen style, without this I could hardly deserve the respectful ’master’ title.
Humbleness toward my own master, who beat the path in front of me with hard work, that is why I could walk on that path more easily, without whom I could be just a faint shadow of the actual myself.
Humbleness toward my students, who turn toward me with trust and who put a part of their life into my hands to do their best with my help. They consider me as a role model for them, from an aspect that was previously explained, so if I can not show any humbleness, then they can lose the most necessary moral for being happy in life… the humbleness.
Humbleness toward my kung-fu brothers, from whom I not just expect help, but I help them and stand behind them as much as I can. In case I could not do this, at least I do not make their life more difficult and do not abuse with their helpfulness and charity...
Humbleness toward my closer and my larger environment with making myself useful many ways in life besides martial arts for as many people as possible. As a responsible citizen I assist the prosperity of my environment with not just words but acts.
Humbleness toward myself and others to be able to do my best for my own development, in addition instead of blaming someone else, being able to look into myself for searching faults and accept my own faults.
Becoming a master is not measured in physical performance nor in the number of students. Many people are chasing the dream of invincibility as well, though invincible person does not exist, just who is forced to prove constantly by his complexes.
The point in becoming a master is that who and for how much can understand the fact, that the main purpose of all martial arts is to acquire those skills and self-confidence which makes you capable of solving situations and difficulties from life without real fight, so you can get out of these struggles of life as a winner without having any real fight.
During this who – instead of egoism- is capable of self-criticism and who is searching with appropriate open-mindedness can recognize his own inner reality, without recognizing and coming over it, there is no long-lasting outer win…who can show the way after this to others… is the real MASTER.
